Project Car for EV Conversion

A 1978 Fiat Bertone has been selected for the electrical vehicle project car. Electrical parts for the vehicle will be installed in the vehicle once the gasoline components are removed. The car weighs 2,280 pounds.

Starting Another Phase

The tractor project is into another phase. Students and Mentor Larry Guy have dis-assembled the electrical components of the tractor to build a board where the parts are mounted. A working model of the electrical will be constructed on the board. Once completed, the components will be re-installed into the tractor.

Tractor is Running!

The tractor finally came together this summer. The electrical parts (controller, ignition switch, resistor, contactor, batteries) we connected. The tractor is up and running.

Tractor Project is Coming Together!

Work on the tractor project has continued and the final steps of getting the project completed are coming together. The motor will be mounted next and connected to the controller. Some research is needed to figure out the components needed for the electrical system.

Battery Boxes

Students mount the battery boxes and throttle controller. The next steps is to mount the battteries and connect the batteries to the motor.

Motor Mount is Ready to Use

The motor mount for the 24 volt dc motor is ready to use. The motor mount was manufactured by Canon City HS machine shop students.

What does the controller do?

This drawing shows the function of the controller in an electric vehicle compared to the carburator in a gasoline engine.

Alltrax Controller

The controller for the tractor projector was donatted by the AllTrax Company a leading supplier for electric vehicle components.

Mounting of the Motor

Motor mounting - 4 hp DC motor

A drawing for the motor bracket was drawn up by Werner Windbergs and given to the school's machine shop for students to fabricate the motor mount. The two piece mount will be bolted to the frame of the tractor to secure the motor to the tractor. A v belt will connect the motor to the drive pulley.

Motor Selected for EV Project

A 4 hp DC motor found on eBay has been selected and ordered for the EV garden tractor project.

Here are the specifications for the motor:

- 4 HP 24 VDC ELECTRIC MOTOR

- Serial Wound

- 45 AMPS NO LOAD

- 140 AMPS FULL LOAD

- 8000 RPM FULL LOAD

- 32 INCH POUND OF TORQUE

- ¾” DIAM. X 1 ¾” KEYWAY SHAFT

- DIMENSION 4” DIAM. X 7 ¾”
